Polarity of the Molecule

Above is a model of the molecule. The black represents the carbon atoms, the white represents the hydrogen atoms, and the red represents oxygen atom.

The arrows in the picture show the flow of polarity between the atoms in the molecule. The flow always goes from lower value to higher value. To determine which way the flow of polarity goes one must look at the electronegativity value of each atom, or how negative an atom is. Once all the values for the electronegativity are known then it is easier to find out which way the direction of the polarity flow is.

Electronegativity Values

C
O
2.5
3.4

Because the value of O is greater than C the polarity flow is going toward the O, making this a Polar Bond.

C
H
2.5
2.2

Because the value of C is greater than H the polarity flow is going towards the C, making this a Polar Bond.

C
C
2.5
2.5

Since both of these atoms have the same value there is no arrow because the two are balanced, making the bond Non-Polar or making the bond is purely covalent.
